Socialist Opposition to the First World War

The Marx Memorial Library and Workers' School is pleased to announce the Heritage Lottery Funded supported exhibition 'Socialist Opposition to the First World War' arranged by Professor Mary Davis and project manager Luke Evans.

Exhibition lead curator Professor Mary Davis said, "Given the wave of patriotism and triumphalism which has categorised the centenary "celebrations" of the First World War, we have always wanted to show the other side. Far from being a glorious episode, we regard the war as an imperialist inspired misadventure resulting in senseless sacrifice.

We have discovered within the hidden treasures in the Marx Memorial Library archives, that there was far more opposition to the war than the standard histories give credence to. This opposition was in the main inspired by socialism. Hence the title of our exhibition "Socialist Opposition to the First World War". Our exhibition will include an illustrated set of displays detailing the history and politics of this opposition.

We are also going to be able to display important archival material through our new exhibition website, including a unique digitised collection of 'The Call' newspaper of the British Socialist Party covering the years 1916-1917."

There will be a sneak preview of the exhibition as part of the range of events held at the Marx Memorial Library and Workers' School as part of the Open House weekend running on Sunday, September 20th, 2015.
